Modeling needs a new ideal

We can blame it on Kate Moss. Or the fashion designers. Or the glossy magazines that feature those fashion designers. Or ourselves, for buying those magazines and feeding the beauty machines. It doesn't really matter, does it? A decade ago, give or take a couple of years, the fashion world changed so abruptly that we're all still reeling. Cindy Crawford and the rest of the glamazons were out. Moss and the so-called waifs, the purveyors of "heroin chic," were in. So long, self-confidence; hello, self-criticism. Do you remember George Michael's "Freedom '90" video? It featured Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Tatiana Patitz. These models, these runway glamazons, were far from average, but at least they still looked like women. Compare them with the runway models of today whose bodies are at the center of an international debate....

Papal pinup? Italian mag to publish calendar of pope

VATICAN CITY -- He already has been spotted as a fashion follower, from his signature shades and shoes, to his ermine trimmed velvet robes, but now Pope Benedict XVI is trying his hand at modeling for a 2007 calendar to come out later this month. ''Together, a year with the pope,'' said the Italian Catholic weekly Famiglia Cristiana in announcing the calendar. The calendar features 14 original poses of the 79-year-old pontiff taken during an entire day of shooting this summer at Castel Gandolfo, the pope's country residence near Rome. While many VIP calendars feature celebrities in scanty attire, the papal version is as chaste as it is charitable. Proceeds from the photos of the pope dressed in his white cassock and skull cap, will go to a mission in Rwanda. AP ....

A Terre Haute-based racing team has partnered with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in a joint venture that has the racing world taking notice.Terre Haute-based Formula BMW racing team, Team Apex USA, has joined with Rose-Hulman and Z Corporation to use 3-D modeling to improve race car aerodynamics. This sort of technology is not normally found in the Formula BMW series, Team Apex co-owner David Hunt said Friday. Such technology would normally be found in top racing series, such as Formula One, he said.Members of other race teams – including teams in the Champ Car and Indy Racing League – have contacted Team Apex to learn more about what they are doing, he added. "Part of beating the competition is beating them off the track," Hunt said.In addition to making Team Apex even more competitive for the 2007 season, the joint-venture is giving Rose engineering students with an interest in motor sports an opportunity for some real world experience."That's what we're trying to do here is give these guys a chance" to enter the highly competitive world of motor sports, said Nick Synder, a 2006 Rose graduate who is now race engineer for Team Apex....

Colorado State University's Don Estep, a professor in the mathematics and statistics departments, was recently awarded a $500,000 grant from U.S. Department of Energy, to provide mathematical tools to enable whole-device modeling for the U.S. fusion program. The grant is a component of a major $11 million project called Framework Application for Core-Edge Transport Simulations, or FACETS, awarded to the Boulder-based Tech X through the Department of Energy 2006 Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing Awards 2, or SCIDAC2, program. FACETS will provide a multi-physics parallel-framework application that will enable the modeling infrastructure needed to develop a device called ITER, which can be used to confine magnetic-fusion plasma. ITER is a joint international research and development project that aims to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of a full-scale fusion power reactor....

B eing asked if your home can be photographed for a magazine is almost as flattering as "Did you ever think about modeling?" So what does it mean when someone offers to put your home in a movie? For photographer Larry N. Olson, it was a chance of a lifetime. For art lovers who take the Portland Open Studios tour Oct. 21-22, it's a chance to get a peek at a Southeast Portland home that turned Hollywood heads. "The Feast of Love," the movie starring Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman and Greg Kinnear, has been shot all over Portland. The film is an ode to love and its vagaries, based on the novel by Charles Baxter. In the movie, Kinnear plays a coffee-shop owner and photographer who has a studio in his home. His studio, garden and coffee shop are sites in the film....
