Immigrants Model at Spain Fashion Show

A Spanish fashion designer used illegal African immigrants as models at a Barcelona fashion show to draw attention to the plight of thousands of poor migrants who embark on dangerous sea expeditions for a chance at better lives in Europe. Eight Senegalese immigrants paraded down the catwalk in white and beige outfits Thursday as part of the show, which also featured a white wooden fishing boat -- the same type many illegal immigrants use to reach Spain's Canary Islands off west Africa. Antonio Miro, the fashion designer, used inmates as models in a show last year and said in Thursday's show he wanted to show his support for the immigrants, some of whom were in the process of obtaining working papers in Spain and others of whom were illegal. "It's a way of giving them a tiny bit of me," Miro said, adding that the eight models were paid a small fee....

From Victorian frock coats to Seventies platforms, Chanel suits to military uniforms, the contents of The Priestley's wardrobe department reflect more than a century of social history. And now the historic costumes, which have appeared in productions at the Little Germany theatre over the decades, are being shown off on the catwalk. The Priestley is staging The Way We Wore, a fashion show featuring a range of vintage clothes dating back to early productions from when the theatre was founded, with the help of JB Priestley, in 1929. It is only the second time the theatre has held a fashion show. Wardrobe mistress Angela Curtis said that while the costumes won't be for sale, they will be available for people to hire for fancy dress parties or other themed events....

The Phantom of the Opera may not swing down from the chandelier in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Universal hotel on Sunday, but the 22nd annual Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Fashion Show, Boutique and Luncheon promises a "surprise celebrity Phantom." The show, which sports a "Phantom of the Opera" theme, will reproduce the masquerade ball from the musical "The Phantom of the Opera" and include costumes by Bob Mackie and E.C.2 Costumes. According to Shelley Hann, president of the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Guild, ticket sales, donations, raffle and a pre-show boutique to the event, are expected to help generate $60,000 to benefit the community hospital. The boutique will feature women's fashions and accessories, jewelry, beauty products and home decor....

LONDON, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- The British Fashion Awards played out without Model of the Year Kate Moss showing up to collect her award. The Telegraph reported that designer Vivienne Westwood accepted the award on Moss's behalf just before Westwood was named Red Carpet Designer of the Year in ceremonies Thursday. Moss's absence comes in the wake of a scandal this year resulting from pictures that allegedly showed Moss using drugs. The British Fashion Awards, at London's Victoria & Albert Museum, named Mario Schwab as New Designer of the Year, Eugene Souleiman as Fashion Creator of the Year and Kim Jones as Menswear Designer of the Year. The award for Designer of the Year went to Giles Deacon. ....

It's challenging for petite women (5-feet-4 and under) to make the bold shapes of fall work in their favor. To the rescue: petite KHNL TV meteorologist Sharie Shima and special-events director at Macy's Lavina Wong. They've put together a fall fashion show just for petites. Designers include Eileen Fisher, AK Anne Klein, Kaua'iana and many more. Those attending the show are encouraged to make a suggested donation of $10 to the American Heart Association. Pop star JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE turned fashion designer last night (17OCT06) at the runway debut of his William Rast clothing line at Los Angeles Fashion Week. The SEXYBACK star decided to show his collection at one of Hollywood's hottest nightspots instead of the official fashion week site at Smashbox Studios in Culver City. A catwalk and scores of bleacher seats were added to a section of nightclub Social Hollywood for the show. Another part of the massive club was reserved for the exclusive after-party where the 25-year-old Grammy Award winner performed for the crowd. The star-studded guest list included WILMER VALDERRAMA, EVE and Timberlake's girlfriend CAMERON DIAZ, who gave interviews and posed for pictures before taking a seat in the front row.
