The Art Of Tasting Spirits

In this excerpt from The Complete Book of Spirits, Anthony Dias Blue discusses the joys of tasting spirits. He also provides tips on what to look for in terms of appearance, nose and taste when sampling classic spirits. It’s not by accident that distilled products are referred to as spirits, since they very much represent the essence of the substances from which they’re made. A great brandy captures the very spirit of the grapes from which it originated, just as a great whisky captures the spirit of its original grain. In spirits, the humble products of the earth -- grapes, corn, wheat, barley, potatoes, and sugarcane -- are transformed into a rarefied quintessence. vodkaVodka can be infused with flavors, mixed in cocktails, appreciated neat or over ice. It can be sipped or slugged....

IT'S the middle of a sun-blasted September afternoon, and Penélope Cruz is sitting in an empty hotel banquet room, Chanel bag by her side. She is trying to talk about acting, but she keeps coming back to legendary Spanish flamenco singer Camarón de la Isla. Camarón devotees don't usually carry Chanel bags. He was raw, brash and dead at 41, and his singing was the sound of hurt, his cigarette-stained voice a cracking tumult of anguish that sliced through any adornment that tried to dress it up. ....

Some industrious moms and dads begin sewing their children's Halloween costumes long before the leaves turn from green to gold. For other parents, the holiday has a way of creeping up on them. We've asked some crafty experts to help procrastinators assemble simple costumes and decor just days before "trick-or-treat" time. Kimberly Dutzek, owner of Party Central Rental and Sales, 124 Route 22 in Pawling, said it's easy to create a spider costume by starting with an old black sweatshirt. "Get some black panty hose and stockings, stuff those with stuffing from a craft store, and then string a piece of yarn or string through the tips of the stockings," she said. "Tie the top one to your wrist. Your arms are going to be the first set of legs. And then safety-pin three pairs of stockings, the rest of the legs, to the sweatshirt....

If our eyes are the windows to the world, then mascara makes the world a lot more beautiful. And this fall more than ever. Beauty experts agree that mascara is making a lot of eye contact with women. Over the summer, it dominated makeup trend conversations from New York to Los Angeles. And why not? Women love it when their eyes stand out. Lucky for us, just about every major cosmetics company has introduced a new mascara for fall. Some tout new technology, such as better brushes and formulas. Others offer goof-proof, smudge-proof promises. And everyone is buying it. Sales of prestige brands of mascara (i.e., department store labels such as Lancome and Chanel) were more than $244 million in 2005, an 8 percent increase, according to the NPD Group, which tracks consumer spending....

Tips for making your bed a sleeping beauty

Here are some tips for getting that showroom look in your bedrooms at home: • Start with a good thick mattress and box spring. If your fitted sheet is big enough to accommodate it, add a thick mattress pad or down pillow top to your mattress....
