French hair-care giant L'Oreal surprised Sally Beauty Holdings, the spin-off of Alberto-Culver, by taking away Sally's exclusive rights to sell L'Oreal's shampoo and hair-care products to beauty salons. Sally also will lose its exclusive rights to sell some of L'Oreal's products in its Sally Beauty Supply retail stores, though the stores will continue to sell L'Oreal products. Sally will lose $110 million in revenue in the last nine months of its 2007 fiscal year due to L'Oreal's decision, according to Sally Beauty Co.'s filing of a regulatory statement late Tuesday. Alberto-Culver, the Melrose Park-based maker of Alberto VO5 shampoo and St. Ives body lotion, spun off Sally on Nov. 10 as a separate, publicly traded company. Sally has yearly revenues of more than $2 billion and is headquartered in Denton, Texas....

Some of the dorm rooms on campus could very well be called Salon Albion College. Instead of going home to an expensive salon to fulfill beauty needs, students are saving money by turning their dorm room into a beauty shop. Both men and women on campus have been turning to their roommates and friends to trim, dye, or highlight their hair. "I remember one of the first weeks of freshman year, we highlighted one of our friends hair," said Jaclyn Morawa, Livonia junior. "It actually didnt turn out bad at all." Ryan Powell, Laingsburg junior, gets his hair cut from one of his friends in his fraternity house, Alpha Tau Omega. He feels that the quality of the haircut is the same as going to a professional barber. "It depends who you go to: there is one guy in town that was terrible, and Id rather have my friend cut it over him," Powell said....
