Was the Miami Dolphins' stunning upset victory over the Chicago Bears last Sunday an aberration, or was it a springboard? That question will be answered this Sunday, when Nick Saban and company try to put together their first two-game winning streak of 2006 against the visiting Kansas City Chiefs. Miami went into Chicago and handed the previously-unbeaten Bears a humbling 31-13 defeat, forcing quarterback Rex Grossman into six turnovers, cashing the miscues in for a season-high 31 points, and ending a four-game losing streak in the process. The victory was also the first as a Miami starter for quarterback Joey Harrington, who will this week be making his fifth consecutive start in place of the injured Daunte Culpepper. Despite the win, the Dolphins remain in last place in the AFC East, a game back of 3-5 Buffalo for the third spot in the division....

Washington -- No matter who triumphs in today's voting, supporters of both political parties will have something to be happy about: They probably will not have to stay up too late to know which way the midterm elections are heading. "The key races in Congress are concentrated in the eastern and central time zones, so we ought to have a good sense of the trend relatively early in the evening," said Amy Walter of the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. In the Senate, Democrats would have to gain six seats to win a majority, and all but one of the most competitive races are in the East or Midwest: Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Ohio and Maryland. The single nail-biter farther west is Montana. Most tossup House races also are clustered in states east of the Mississippi River....

The hunt for Botswana's fairest lass is on. And last weekend, it intensified at the Newscafe where The Miss Botswana semi-finals were held to select the best fifteen out of thirty. The glittering event was sponsored by CB Holdings, Topline, Mmegi and Monitor newspapers, Newscafe and Redds companies. Among the fifteen contestants who made it were Sebaga Sono, Ame Moremi, Ellonah Thato and Malebogo Marumoagae. The pageant, which was prejudged a week before, proved a disappointment to some enthusiasts, who had come to witness the event. A member of the audience, who identified herself as Kgalemo, told the Monitor that the pageant could "have been better." "The problem is that the girls already knew that they had lost, while others knew they had won," she complained. "It was not fair on us....

BINIBINING Pilipinas-International Denille Lou Valmonte grew up thinking she was less than pretty. I had a lot of crushes when I was in grade school but they didnt like me, said the 24-year-old lass. So I said to myself, someday you will look up to me. Last March, when Denille won the Miss International crown, a lot of people indeed looked up to her, notably those from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) where she got her degree in hotel and restaurant management. I didnt know I was the first national beauty titlist from PUP, said Denille. I only learned about it when I saw it written on the congratulatory banners posted in the campus. It took a deal of persistence from her loved ones before she was convinced she had what it takes to be a beauty queen....

What's ugly, slimy and slowly vanishing from Ohio?
Posted Tuesday, October 17, 2006 6:47:18 PM by Blog57 Team
One of Ohios most interesting animals is one of our states most bizarre. The eastern hellbender, Cryptobranchus alleganiensis, looks like a linear blob of shapeless protoplasm that sprouted legs and came to life. Predictably, such a strange critter has spawned colorful nicknames, including "devil-dog" and "snot-otter." The latter name is because of its slimy skin. Hellbenders are aquatic salamanders, the largest Ohio representatives in this family. One whopper measured nearly 2 1/2 feet. They live in the shallows of clear, rapidly flowing streams and spend much time under large rocks, hence its flat body that makes it easy to maneuver in tight quarters. Like an over-tanned beach bum, hellbenders blackish-olive skin is full of wrinkles. They have tiny, beady eyes and a too-wide mouth. Their tail is laterally compressed like a muskrats....
