Namibia: Holidaymakers Must Abide
Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 6:49:44 AM by Blog57 Team
Holidaymakers visiting Walvis Bay and Swakopmund will this season have to abide by all the environmental rules to help halt the current destruction being exacted on the coast's natural attractions. About 50 stakeholders gathered at Langstrand yesterday to mark the beginning of the implementation of a Contingency Management Plan for the affected areas. Due to the negative impact that an influx of holidaymakers can have on the environment at the coastal towns, a meeting was deemed necessary just before Christmas arrives to address this problem which if not tackled immediately might seriously affect some of the natural habitat on which the country prides itself. Walvis Bay and Swakopmund receive thousands of visitors from within and beyond the borders of the country annually, but especially during the festive season....

Alexandria needs

Think about this: Several issues regarding the hiring of consultants and issues regarding funding certain festivals in the city of Alexandria have been presented to the city Finance Committee for debate and approval before they were subsequently approved by the full City Council. But when an issue as important as the hiring of more police officers was to come before that same committee, it was pulled from the agenda by Mayor Ned Randolph. Isn't protecting the residents of this city worth talking about? ....

Dubai: Never shy of entering virgin territory, Britain's most famous businessman Sir Richard Branson is targeting Dubai's cosmetics and jewellery market using a novel retail scheme. After the Virgin Group's Virgin Vie range nose-dived in international stores and was axed from the market two years ago, company heads are launching the direct selling concept Virgin Vie At Home in Dubai. The system of trained consultants selling cosmetics, skin care products and jewellery directly to consumers has proved a hit in the UK since it was launched in 1999, reaching annual sales of £80 million. Virgin took the scheme to South Africa where first year sales reached 17 million rand. John Jackson, chairman of Virgin Retail, is hoping to have between 500 and 700 consultants on the books within a year of the Dubai launch and says sales of Dh5 million are within reach....

Biocultural anthropologist and author, winner of the American Anthropological Society Margaret Mead award in 1995, Katherine A. Dettwyler, will be presenting at the Le Leche League Conference at the Auckland Conference Centre on Tuesday, 24 October. Dr Dettwyler has conducted research on child health and growth for more than 25 years. “Health care professionals say they don't want to give mothers complete and accurate information about the risks of artificial infant formula because they are worried about making mothers feel guilty about not breastfeeding,” she says. “Guilt is often used to promote healthy behaviors in health advertising.” Dr Dettwyler is best known for her research on the natural age of weaning in modern humans (2.5 years to 7.0 years) as well as her analyses of the broader cultural factors that have an effect on whether women are successful at breastfeeding....

It's been several decades since Wichita has watched a homegrown company explode into a multinational operation with thousands of employees. But local entrepreneurs and experts said it would be wrong to believe that entrepreneurialism has faltered here because there are no recent Pizza Huts or Rent-A-Centers to point to. "That doesn't mean we're not entrepreneurial," said Trish Brasted, president and chief executive of Wichita Technology Corp., a public-private organization that invests in and advises technology-oriented startup companies. Brasted and others said there are many companies here that, while not on the scale of a Pizza Hut, are successful ventures: Big Dog Motorcycles LLC, Carlos O'Kelly's, Vornado Air Circulation Systems, Corporate Lodging Consultants and Fox & Hound Restaurant Group, to name a few....

Fourteen current and former African National Congress (ANC) MPs were convicted and fined on Monday after pleading guilty to theft and fraud charges stemming from abuse of parliamentary travel vouchers. The sentencing, carried out in the Cape High Court in terms of plea-bargain agreements with the Scorpions, came only a day ahead of their next scheduled court appearance in the case. And more plea agreements are in the offing, according to Scorpions prosecutor Jannie van Vuuren. Before Monday's plea bargains, a total of 23 current and former MPs, including one from the Democratic Alliance, had been due in court on Tuesday, along with five travel agency employees and bosses. The 14, who include the general secretary of the ANC Women's League, Bathabile Dlamini, were sentenced by Cape Judge President John Hlophe to fines ranging from R25 000 to R120 000, with alternatives of three to five years' jail....
